Pregnancy Massage

A Pregnancy massage can be a wonderful relaxing experience for both mum and unborn baby. As well as relieving aches and pains, it also gives mum a chance to relax, connect with her growing baby and prepare for the birth.

During pregnancy the body goes through enormous changes both physically and hormonally, which can have a huge emotional effect on mum to be. For example, the body releases the hormone Relaxin which allows the ligaments to loosen off in preparation for the birth. This, along with an increasing ‘bump’ can cause mum to develop discomfort in the low back and hip areas.

Massage is an effective non-drug alternative for the management of common musculoskeletal issues. It can help resolve any old injuries that may flare up, optimise biomechanics preventing posture-related dysfunction, and help prepare for labour by maintaining the body in a good physical condition.

As well as the general benefits of massage, a pregnancy massage can also help to relax baby before the birth, as any feel-good endorphins released by mum will be passed on. It can also help with relieving constipation, headaches, leg cramps, morning sickness, and promote better sleep/circulation – which will help with the labour process. The massage could also aid with swelling/oedema by encouraging lymphatic drainage and help with reducing nerve pain caused by compression.

Things to consider before booking a massage – would be any history of bleeding/miscarriage, high or unstable blood pressure, pitted oedema, and abdominal pains. Massage may not be appropriate in these circumstances.

There are other medical conditions which require extra care during the pregnancy and it may be that permission from your health care provider will be sought before carrying out the massage. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns over the suitability of having a Pregnancy massage.

What to expect during a Pregnancy massage

The massage will be carried out on my table in a side lying position. I will use supports and coverings during the massage to help Mum feel comfortable, relaxed, warm and secure. Advice will be given on ways to move from one side to the other, depending on current physical capabilities. Pressure will be adapted to suit personal needs. I will use various massage techniques to help relax the muscles which, in a full body, will include the back, neck, shoulders, arms and hands, legs and feet. The abdominal area can also be covered and a face massage included if Mum is still comfortable lying on her back.
