Hot Stones Massage

The use of Hot Stones as a healing medium has been around for thousands of years, the practice, however, was ‘reborn’ in 1993 by Mary Nelson, who started experimenting with the combination of massage and stones. She developed the technique, naming it LaStone Therapy, by using both hot and cold stones to provide a complete and detoxifying massage. The idea was quickly seized upon and has since been developed around the world, into the Hot Stones massage we all enjoy today.

I have chosen to work with naturally occurring basalt rock. Basalt is a volcanic rock containing many healing elements including oxygen and magnesium. It is also rich in iron and silica which together enhance the stones thermal storage capabilities. These stones, found along the coastal areas of Peru, have been naturally smoothed and shaped by the forces of the sea. Peruvian basalt is considered the most superior in the world as it has the highest mineral content and greatest heat retention.

On a spiritual/holistic level the stones are said to offer grounding, encourage personal growth and inner transformation, help release negative energies and embrace new beginnings.

As well as the general benefits of massage, the introduction of heat, which penetrates further into the body, can help promote a deeper relaxation of the muscles, softening adhesions and nodules. Over time this may help to increase the range of motion of a joint or muscle.

The additional heat provided by the Hot Stones may not be advisable for conditions such as pregnancy, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart issues, skin conditions and those on blood thinning drugs. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns over the suitability of having a Hot Stones massage.

What to expect during a Hot Stones massage

Before the massage takes place the stones will be heated to a temperature between 110°F to 140°F (43°C to 60°C). I will use various massage techniques to help relax the muscles which, in a full body, will include in the back, neck, shoulders, arms and hands, legs and feet, and the upper chest area. At each stage, before introducing heat, I will warm my hands with the hot stones and apply several strokes, this will help to prepare your skin and also ensure the stones are at the correct working temperature. I can also include a cold stone face massage at the end to bring your session to a close.

Pressure and stone heat can be adapted to suit your personal needs so please let me know, throughout, if either exceed your comfort levels.
